Baltimore’s first accredited FootGolf course to honor Craig Willinger Fund founder

BALTIMORE, MD – Baltimore City is now home to the first American FootGolf League (AFGL)  accredited FootGolf course in the Baltimore metropolitan area. FootGolf, a combination of soccer and golf, is typically played on a modified 18-hole golf course. Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation (BMGC) will host a grand opening event on September 30th to commemorate the newly installed course at Baltimore Classic Five’s Carroll Park Golf Course.

Additionally, BMGC will also be celebrating a newly formed partnership with the Craig Willinger Fund (CWFund) to promote soccer and FootGolf in the community. The new FootGolf course, to be named the Craig Willinger Memorial FootGolf Course at Carroll Park, is a fitting tribute to the CWFund founder’s passion for his hometown and soccer.

Craig Willinger, a Highlandtown native, was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia at the age of 37. He was gifted a trip by strangers to see his favorite soccer team play in Germany as a means of uplifting his spirits during his cancer treatment. He was so inspired by the experience, that he wanted to provide the same gift for other soccer fans with cancer. Craig passed away in 2012 due to complications from a bone marrow transplant.

The Craig Willinger Fund seeks to improve the lives of children and young adults stricken with cancer by providing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to experience world-class soccer—both domestically and abroad. Since 2010, honorees have traveled to South Africa, Barcelona, Milan, London, Madrid, New York City, Manchester, and Brazil, including events like the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League Final.
