Eudom Moncada

Spring 2014 Honoree

In 2011 at the age of 19, Eudom was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer knows as DSRCT – desmoplastic small round cell tumor. His treatments have included surgery, radiation, and he undergoes ongoing chemotherapy to fight this disease.

Eudom shared that cancer took away everything in his life just as he was stepping out on his own. A soccer fan in his youth, Eudom struggled with his diagnosis and treatment but found new friends through a church soccer league. Despite being extremely weak from treatment and surgery, this league welcomed him and he decided he would use soccer as emotional and physical therapy. “I learned to be patient with myself,” shared Eudom as he recounted not being able to run. He now plays three times a week.

Eudom visited Old Trafford in Manchester, England, to see Manchester United face Hull City on May 6, 2014. As a special guest of Manchester United, Eudom and his brother were treated to a VIP experience that included a game day experience in the Warwick Suite as well as a private meet-and-greet with Javier “Chicarito” Hernández.

Eudom used to say he dreamed in days. Despite his terminal diagnosis, his care team at the MD Anderson Cancer Center dreamed with him, continually investigating options that could improve his health. Eudom also thought of others by participating in research studies focused on his rare form of cancer. He fought bravely until his death on February 6, 2015. We at the CWFund are privileged to have shared a small part of Eudom’s life and will cherish his memory.
